Tech Thursday
How can parents be on the "good side" of their child's use of technology and avoid being the "nag" who puts a stop to all things that are digitally fun?  Here are a few things to think about that may make you even more awesome than you already are in your child's eyes:

1. Show and tell: If your child is using a device, program, or website you aren't familiar with, have them show you how it works. Kids love to show off their technologies.  The actually want you to watch them when they game or have a new device.  Let's face it... with the speed that new technologies are introduced, it's impossible to keep up.  Let your child teach you how to use their technologies.  This really helps develop an open line of communication!

2. Don't be afraid to "Google it": It's easy to forget that Google can reveal a lot about each of us.  Do a search for your name (or your child's) and you may be surprised what appears.  Use Google (or other search engine) to search for technology trends that your child may be taking part in.  It's easy to put on "blinders" and not want to know what our children are doing but Google can provide a great educational opportunity for you.  Now, get out there an learn!

3. Keep tech public: Does your child keep a computer or technology device that can access the Internet or take photos in their bedroom?  Do you monitor your child's activities when s/he is online?  Children and students are at a heightened risk of questionable, and oftentimes illegal, activities when they are left unsupervised on their devices.  There isn't a magical age when children should be allowed to have devices in the privacy of their bedrooms (maturity is a huge factor in this) but the temptation to do things that could affect their future is just plain too big when devices are allowed into their bedroom.

4. Get excited: Get excited about the possibilities that technologies can provide in your home.  The Internet is a fantastic tool and can open up doors for everybody.  However, as with any tool, care must be taken that it is used appropriately.  Show your children that you can be just as excited as they are with new innovations, apps, sites, programs, etc.  This will give parents and students something to talk about and it can provide a wonderful bonding opportunity.
