Face it: Most of us don't create very good passwords. We want to create passwords that are easy for us to remember. But that means that hackers will find them easy to figure out. So what should you keep in mind when creating good, quality passwords?
- Use a combination of numbers, letters, and symbols. For instance Hamburgers@reGr82eat! would be a good password. Plus, it's a phrase (hamburgers are great to eat) which helps you remember what it is.
- The longer the password, the better (at least 8 characters).
- Stay away from common names or words like city names, phone numbers, dates, or anything else that can be associated with you.
- Try not to write it down. It's amazing how many computers I see that have passwords taped or stuck on the monitor.
- Change your password often. Schedule your password change for every 3 to 6 months (at the most).
- Don't tell other people what your password is. If you do, change it immediately.
