Help your teen stay safe and sober at prom.

For too many teens, prom means more than a formal dance and a corsage. It's also a night for underage drinking and this can lead to serious problems. Car accidents frequently come to mind but that's not the only danger. Teens often binge on alcohol, drinking five or more drinks in a row. This can lead to alcohol poisoning or even death.

Here are some steps to take to help keep your teen safe and sober:
  • Talk about drinking and the dangers of alcohol before the prom. Send a clear message that you do not want your teen drinking on prom night or any other time.

  • Find out who will be driving. If your teen will be riding in a limousine, make sure the limousine company does not allow underage drinking.

  • Work with other parents to plan alcohol-free parties before and after the prom.

  • Prepare your teen for peer pressure. Brainstorm some ways to say no to drinking. Role-play so your teen can practice saying no.

  • Don’t allow your teen to go to a party in a hotel room.

  • Stay up until your teen gets home safely.
