Superintendent's Biography

Mr. Jeff Corkery, EDS is in his seventh year tenure as Superintendent of Western Dubuque Schools. Prior to his appointment at Western Dubuque, Mr. Corkery served as Superintendent of Schools for the Tipton Community Schools in Tipton, Iowa for 13 years. Previous to this position he was a shared superintendent at the Allison-Bristow & Clarksville school districts from 1991-93. He started his educational career as a business teacher at Notre Dame High School in Cresco, IA. He also taught business and coached at Shellsburg High School and Cedar Rapids Regis.
Prior to assuming his first superintendent job, Mr. Corkery was a secondary principal. His first principal position was at St. John's of Independence from 1985-87. He then became principal of Waukon High School in 1987, which served 405 students. He has served both as a principal, activities director and coach in both the private and public school in his 29 years in education.
He received his BA and MA from the University of Northern Iowa and his Specialist Degrees from Drake University in 1995. He was selected as Grant Wood's Superintendent of the Year in 1999. He was elected and served two years as Chairperson of the Grant Wood Area Education Superintendents. He is a graduate of the National Staff Development Academy. Mr. Corkery has taught classes for both Drake and the University of Northern Iowa on school finance and quality concepts in education. He was a facilitator for New Administrators Workshop sponsored by State of Iowa and School Administrators of Iowa.
Mr. Corkery was also one of two superintendents in the state of Iowa to serve as a varsity coach. He has coached the Tipton varsity girl's basketball for the past three years. His last two teams qualified for the state tournament, which was the first time in school history and he was selected 2A Northeast Iowa Girls Basketball Coach of the year.
Mr. Corkery is married to Judy and he and his wife have three children.

While a relatively small district in number, with 2800 students in K -12, we offer children and families a wide range of choices in instructional delivery methods and programs. I invite and urge you to visit any of the schools in our district. You will be amazed by what you see. You will find our staff is second to none and are truly dedicated to children and their learning. You will find a curriculum that is challenging, innovative and differentiated to meet the needs of individual children. Moreover, if you visit our community, you will leave with the sense that this is a community that truly values children, families and education. We have a great thing here and we are proud of it.
Our strategic plan calls for "Success for All" with our guiding philosophy "Better Every Day". The plan represents our commitment to continually improving the three key areas that contribute to quality schools. We promise to focus on student achievement and success, to manage our resources responsibly, and to develop healthy relationships with one another. The three areas may sound simple on the surface but our success is dependent on collective effort and dedication. Our mission is to inspire and challenge our students and provide them with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to become responsible citizens.
