Western Dubuque School District encourages all students to reach for the stars.  It is our goal to help all students achieve their highest potential which we do by allowing all students access to the core curriculum.  Students who are eligible for special education services are proved individualized services that are specific to their need.  A continuum of services is provided so that students can be educated in the least restrictive environment (with same grade peers) to the maximum extent appropriate.  Student progress is monitored to ensure instruction is effective and parents play an integral role in the child's education.  Our special education belief statements guide our work and education decisions.

We believe...

  1. All educators are responsible for making accommodations to allow all students access to the curriculum.
  2. Students are our customers and are active participants in their learning.
  3. Collaboration and ongoing communication between educators, parents, and students is the heart of student success.
  4. Specialized instruction is a service, not a place.  Instruction is tailored to the needs of the child, is challenging, research-based, and assumes all students can learn.
  5. Assessment drives instruction to allow for data-based decision-making.

For more information regarding curriculum and instruction for children with special needs, please contact Tina M. Brestrup, Director of Student Services, or the special education teacher from the appropriate attendance center.
